The whining chair

At this moment, humanity has the power. We determine what happens on the planet and feel entitled to the fate of animals and nature. But what if that is no longer the case? This era is called The Anthropocene. To experiment with the feeling that this era gives us, I have made a speculative product in which the relationship between the human and the non-human is central. The final product is therefore not human-centered.

My approach for this project was to adopt a post-humanist attitude. What if humans, animals and objects are equal to each other? Through a lot of mind maps, brainstorms and iterations I decided to use a human creation, a chair. How does a chair feel when people sit on it? And what would a chair do if it disagreed? How can I ensure that we see people, animals and things as equals by designing from the feelings of a chair?

The final product has become a paper chair that, when you get close, you can hear crying softly. However, it is not an ordinary howl, but the sound of tearing paper. The chair is just sturdy enough that we can call it a chair, but because it is made of paper, no one can actually sit on it. This creates an uncomfortable and guilty feeling in the people who see the chair. I hope this will weaken our strong ego and make people realize that there is more to the world than just humans, and that sooner or later we will have to believe that.
